Chapter

Fifteen

True to her word, Tilda left me alone to explore Guardian Lake on my own. I took the next few days to see how much I could do on my own without asking for help.

More than once, I almost caved in and texted my new friends to accompany me on my adventures, but at the last second, I’d convince myself that if I wanted to survive in whatever world I ended up in, I’d have to become self-sufficient at some point. The only concession I allowed myself was access to the money and credit card Tilda had given me. I thought of it as a necessary tax she should be charged for whisking me away to my new life.

I took advantage of the stellar bus system, even downloading the app onto my phone so it would pay for my rides when I waved it over the scanner. Beyond the stops around town, a few of the routes went out to the different parks and trails scattered around the mountain and lake. I broke in my new hiking shoes on a few of the easier trails, and I couldn’t help but grin when I used the map that Kyle had scribbled his number on for me to choose a different path to explore each day.

Ned learned about my goals and decided he needed to become my personal tour guide. He let me get on the bus and ride in the seat right behind him so he could talk to me while he drove his routes. I found out more information about the businesses and who ran them than I would if I’d gone in to talk to the owners myself. And after a morning of accompanying him, even I could give the tourists boarding the bus some basic information about the area.

As each day of freedom ticked by, I became a little more comfortable on my own. I’d lived by myself even within my marriage, but this was different. At any point and time, I could choose someone to contact and be with or I could remain by myself.

I used the necessary space to think about my current circumstances. Even if I didn’t want to return to my husband, a piece of me was still tethered to my past. It would take more than a few days to detach. And nothing held me here to Guardian Lake other than my new family member. If I wanted to, I could go roam the wide world. However, the more I got to know about the area, the more I liked it. The more it started to feel like home.

After another full day of activities, I ordered takeout from the Indian restaurant in town and set up the feast on the little patio by the river outside of my motel room. Maybe it was the butter chicken I scooped up with a piece of naan that reminded me of the first real meal together with Tilda, or maybe it was the fact that I wished for more company than the rushing water, but I knew it was time to contact her.
